And or But?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008Can sentences be started with “And” or “But”?
In most cases it is said that you can’t, but this is not entirely true.
Nowadays, It is acceptable to start sentences with conjunctions like this. You should, however, use them carefully.
It is in some cases regarded as informal. If you are writing a formal letter you should substitute them with more formal terms.
Below you will find some examples:
- But I am still waiting for his reply.
Could be written as:
- However, I am still waiting for his reply.
- Although I am still waiting for his reply.
Another example:
- And she was moving very quickly.
Could be written as:
- Moreover, she was moving very quickly.
- In addition, she was moving very quickly.
I hope these are helpful for you!

The most common of these are the period or full stop, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, colon and semi-colon, quotes, apostrophe, hyphen and dash, parentheses and brackets.Below is an example of why punctuation is important.

“Grammar can be silly! I can write without it and don’t really need it.” my friend once said. He was not very clever and I never understood a word he wrote to me. I think I’ll learn some punctuation - not too much, enough to write to Uncle Harry. He needs some help!
