For or Since?
This is a big grammar problem especially for German speakers. There is a simple rule to follow:
For is used for a length of time.
- 10 hours
- five days
- three months
- 5 minutes
- 5 years
Since is used for a point of time.
- 1997
- March
- last week
- three weeks ago
- I was a child
Another example together:
- I have lived in Mainz for 5 years or since 2003.
