And or But?
Can sentences be started with “And” or “But”?
In most cases it is said that you can’t, but this is not entirely true.
Nowadays, It is acceptable to start sentences with conjunctions like this. You should, however, use them carefully.
It is in some cases regarded as informal. If you are writing a formal letter you should substitute them with more formal terms.
Below you will find some examples:
- But I am still waiting for his reply.
Could be written as:
- However, I am still waiting for his reply.
- Although I am still waiting for his reply.
Another example:
- And she was moving very quickly.
Could be written as:
- Moreover, she was moving very quickly.
- In addition, she was moving very quickly.
