We use an adjective to describe a noun (a thing) here are a few examples:

(the blue word is the noun)

• It is a big tree.
• She is an intelligent student.
• He is a quiet boy.

We use an adverb to describe a verb (a doing word) here are a few examples:

(the red word is the verb, the green word is the adverb)

• The tree moves slowly in the wind.
• She studies intelligently.
• The boy walks quietly.
